3 Tips To Save MORE Money At The Checkout

You’ve read a lot of articles about saving money at the grocery store, on your bills, and more. But have you ever considered that you can save money on the fly at the checkout? Following these three basic tips will help you discover new ways of saving even MORE money when you step up to the checkout.

Forgetting your money-saving techniques when you walk up to the checkout can leave your wallet feeling empty in the end. You CAN find more ways to save when you are making a transaction. Here my top three:

Tip 1: Ignore Well-Placed Merchandise

Grocery stores are notorious for placing all kinds of fine chocolates, Tic Tacs, gum, magazines, and other temptations almost immediately above where you put your groceries on the conveyor belt. Your eyes don’t have to drift very far before you are subjected to this clever marketing. To save money at the checkout, ignore these products that are destined to be impulsive purchases.

I once worked at a video store, and found that our candy sales were suffering. I asked our manager if I could place the candy right up on the checkout counter, directly below where people would hand me the movies. “Sure, let’s try it,” she said. So I neatly stacked the candy up on the counter - our candy sales skyrocketed. If merchandise is placed out of sight, it’ll be out of mind. Many companies already understand the power of this marketing scheme, so beware!

Tip 2: Price Higher Than Expected? Have Them Put It Back!

Every once in a while, I’ll be at the checkout and an item will ring up higher than I expected to pay. Sometimes this happens randomly, and other times it’s because a coupon we had unexpectedly expired. If this happens to us, we kindly tell the clerk that we don’t wish to purchase the item anymore.

The last thing you want to do is shrug off higher prices, and settle for a number the computer spits out. Instead, save yourself the money and have them put it back on the shelf.

Tip 3: Ask If There Are Any Better Deals

Depending on where you are shopping, it may be appropriate to ask if there are any sales or better deals on the items you are already intending to buy. You might be surprised! A good dose of hesitation on your part might lead to huge savings.

If you’re in a negotiation, one phrase that can save you loads of money is: “That’s not good enough.” If you couple that with a lot of hesitation, you can dig out of the seller’s mind the best deals they have to offer.

Yep, You Can Save More!

There are so many ways you can save money at the checkout, but don’t forget that you can premeditate potential savings before you enter the store!
