Does Thankfulness Have to Do With Humility?

As I’ve been approaching Thanksgiving, I’ve been thinking an awful lot about humility. Perhaps the two have something to do with each other.

I suppose that in order to be thankful, humility sure helps. After all, if you’re prideful and boasting about your accomplishments, are you really going to be thankful for what you have or are you going to think you deserve everything?

The fact of the matter is that we don’t deserve anything. We’re all sinners, broken and fallen from God’s perfect standard.

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God – Romans 3:23 (NIV)

In addition, we’re all born as sinners. Perhaps you know that Bible verse too. But check out the context and find the good news:

Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justificationand life for all people. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous. – Romans 5:18-19 (NIV)

In order for people to be thankful, I’m starting to think that they have to achieve a certain level of humility first. When we realize that we don’t deserve anything and aren’t entitled to free stuff, that’s when humility and thankfulness kick in.
